IS-Wireless Deploys Innovative Open RAN Solution on AMD Platform

IS-Wireless, a 5G mobile network provider, has successfully deployed its Open RAN and 3rd party Core powered by AMD EPYC™ processors. This integration has been accomplished using the containerized method, which allows for a highly transparent software structure.

IS-Wireless has deployed its product (O-DU, O-CU) on the platform based on AMD EPYC™ 7713 processors and confirms that the AMD platform is state-of-the-art for the mobile networks in the Open RAN model. The software was deployed in a container system.

One container houses the CU (Central Unit) docker image, another the DU (Distributed Unit) docker image, while a third container holds the 5G Core docker image. This modular approach makes updates incredibly easy – simple replacement of the image ID in *.yaml file is needed and the update is complete. This is a significant advantage over the competition. The company is also able to run RAN (Radio Access Network) using Docker Swarm or Kubernetes as an orchestrator.

IS-Wireless has integrated the platform with three different Radio Units: Ettus USRP B210 SDR based, Benetel RAN550 (indoor), and Benetel RAN650 (outdoor) radios and is currently testing the 5G technology with both 40 MHz and 100 MHz bandwidth (both MIMO 2×2 and 256QAM). The company is also working on incorporating MIMO 4×2. A  Standalone 5G Core was used. Additionally, the company uses standard SIM cards, which allow testing with various COTS (Commercial Off the Shelf) phones (UE) based on various chipsets.

“To realize the challenge of Open-RAN, the industry needs to deliver excellent radio performance and economy while avoiding vendor lock-in,” said Kumaran Siva, corporate vice president, Strategic Business Development, AMD.

“Our collaboration with IS-Wireless brings cloud native software RAN solutions, powered by 4th Gen AMD EPYC processors, to deliver Open-RAN choice without compromising performance or efficiency.”

“The cooperation with AMD allows us to exploit unique features of our highly disaggregated Liquid RAN solution. The platform we are using helps us to push the technology barriers and opens up new possibilities in reducing costs of network deployment even further. I’m very happy with the hardware choice and look forward to joint projects soon”- said Slawomir Pietrzyk, CEO and Founder of IS-Wireless.

In conclusion, IS-Wireless has demonstrated its commitment to providing cutting-edge Open RAN network solutions by deploying its Open RAN and 3rd party Core on an AMD EPYC-based platform using the docker-compose method. With its transparent software structure, Standalone 5G Core, and use of standard SIM cards, IS-Wireless is positioning itself as a leader in the Open RAN space.
